Princess Grace Hospital, Monaco
As part of the reconstruction of the New Princess Grace Hospital: Comprehensive hospital: MCO (Internal Medicine, Surgery, and Obstetrics), Women’s, Maternity, and Children’s (WMC) unit and Emergency Department – 20 operating rooms – 394 beds and patient spaces – restaurant, pharmacy, administrative offices, kitchens, and laundry facilities – public parking lot with 650 spaces. AREAS: 85,000 m² gross floor area (GFA), 394 beds and patient spaces. The new hospital complex stands between urban life and nature, on the upper edge of the Bay of Monaco, in harmony with its unique site. Rising above this base, the building forms open arches leading to a vast observation deck overlooking the sea on one side and the reception area on the other. Toward the sky and the mountains, the building’s architectural plan unfolds like a flower, offering multiple views of the sea from most of the rooms. It features openings and interior patios that bring natural light into the heart of the hospital. Within these openings and on the roof, landscaped hanging gardens flourish in the spirit of the “Exotic Garden of Monaco.” These are public spaces on the belvedere’s forecourt and areas reserved for patients on the upper terraces. A white shade structure protects the façade. Composed of suspended sunshade slats, it undulates, light as if animated by the breeze. Evoking a drape, it creates arched openings toward the sea and the horizon. This envelope allows air to circulate, filters the sun’s rays, and plays an essential thermal role. Based on an innovative approach, the healthcare facility’s architectural vision provides the best technical and functional solutions for patient care and quality of service, while also offering ambitious environmental solutions. It emerges from a new perspective on the architectural expression of a hospital.
