Aquatic Center, Courchevel
This signage project was commissioned by the German architectural firm Auer+Weber, which was responsible for designing the new aquatic center in Courchevel. The architectural concept is based on a fusion between the alpine landscape and the building—which is resolutely contemporary—whose form echoes the geological strata of the mountains, and whose roof resembles ski slopes in winter. The signage design approach responds to this commitment to integration into the landscape through typographic compositions that echo the theme of strata. Large-format lettering, applied directly to the walls, appears—through its color and geometry—to emanate from the colored alcoves and guides visitors to the various areas and services. The layout and the Garaje typeface, with its stretchable “multi-width” letters, reinforce the horizontal nature of the whole. The names reflect the recreational and leisure activities: for example, the climbing area is nicknamed “hô hisse,” the hair dryer area “vent fréquent,” and so on. Soft hues, derived from the colors already present in the architecture, were chosen to create a coherent and pleasant visual language.
